Ingredients

Crust

  • 4 medium apples, peeled and diced
  • 4 tablespoons Crystal unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 4 tablespoons dulce de leche
  • 2 tablespoons Crystal sour cream
  • 4 tablespoons Crystal whole milk
  • Pinch of salt
  • Premade empanada dough discs (or pie dough cut into circles)
  • Oil for frying

Products used

  • Unsalted Butter

  • Sour Cream

  • Milk

  • Ice Cream

Directions

  • Step 1

Prepare the apple filling. In a medium skillet, melt butter over medium heat until it bubbles slightly. Add the diced apples and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly golden. Sprinkle in cinnamon, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Stir well and cook another 1–2 minutes until fragrant.

  • Step 2

Create the caramel sauce. Pour in milk and simmer for 1–2 minutes, stirring until slightly thickened and glossy.

  • Step 3

Add the sweetness. Remove the skillet from heat and stir in dulce de leche until fully melted and creamy.

  • Step 4

Finish the filling. Let the mixture cool for about 5 minutes. Stir in sour cream for a silky, tangy finish. Transfer to a bowl and cool completely before assembling the empanadas.

  • Step 5

Assemble the empanadas. Place a dough disc on a lightly floured surface. Spoon 1½ tablespoons of the cooled apple filling into the center. Fold the dough into a half-moon shape and press edges firmly. Crimp with a fork to seal. (Optional: brush edges with water or beaten egg before folding.) Repeat with remaining dough and filling.

  • Step 6

Fry to golden perfection. Heat 2 inches of oil in a skillet or pot to 350°F (175°C). Carefully fry 2–3 empanadas at a time for 2–3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crisp. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  • Step 7

Serve and enjoy. Optionally, pair with ice cream or drizzle with extra dulce de leche.
