How to Make a Great Milkshake

In addition to dreaming up the craziest, out-of-the-box toppings and add-ins, there are a few key steps to making the perfect milkshake:

  1. Pull out your blender or immersion blender. It sounds obvious, but is an important factor to consider! In order to get a super creamy, well-mixed milkshake, an appliance made for blending is needed. It doesn’t have to be fancy or expensive, though—you can skip the Vitamix here and go with whatever blender you have on hand.
  2. Get the proportion of ice cream to milk right. This depends on your preference of thickness, but we recommend starting with ½ cup milk for 1½ cups ice cream, or about ½ cup milk for every 3 scoops of ice cream. When in doubt, begin with less milk and add more as you blend.
  3. Use whole milk to create the creamiest milkshake. It sounds like a small detail, but whole milk will take your milkshake from good to great. Whole milk has a closer consistency to the ice cream itself, making it ideal in creating the most decadent milkshake. If all you have on hand is low-fat or skim milk, you can still ‘shake it up, it just won’t be as rich and creamy.
  4. Use high-quality ice cream as your base. Crystal ice cream is made with 100% California milk, simple ingredients and none of the bad stuff: No high fructose corn syrup, no artificial flavors, no artificial colors, no artificial sweeteners. It’s a difference you can taste.
